REVIEW (NiPe)

rate: (4/5) = really good stuff inside

like: centers the declared goal, nice writing style and Java interpreter included.

dislike: IDE chapters, space to use to explain some thing else, like some real example of use of annotations, the HTML CD design.

funny: the first example in the code title "Hello, Java!" in the screeshot is "HelloJava1" :-)

omitted: "SINCE X.Y JDK" tags for Java functionalities.

comment: Inside this book I have felt the deep understand of Java and his history from the author.
This big book is not boaring, text contains nice sentences that will make you enjoy the reading.
For example I found beautiful these parts:
when he uses matrix to let you understand the two-face reality of generics; when he uses the golf course to let you understand the multithreading needings.
Maybe I'will have cut the chapters about Java IDEs, leaving just a reference to Internet or a PDF inside the CD, leaving what I found perfect to learn Java, the Beanshell environment.
By the way, the author of the book is also the author of Beanshell Java interpreter, that's cool :-).
The book is updated to Java 5.0 this is a good news, the bad news is that when he talks about some feature you don't know at witch version of Java it's referencing.
A SINCE tag could be usefull in this sense.
I was a bit surprised by the CD included, the content is ok but the aestethic presentation it's "minimalistc" at least.
Learning Java sure it's a book writen very good, it centers the declared goal to be a starting point, a realy good starting point indeed, I say.

summary: a really good starting point to learn Java
